  • Prof. Kuniharu Takei (Hokkaido Univ.): Multimodal flexible sensors with real-time data analyses using machine learning

Abstract: Multimodal sensors are now of great interests for future Internet of Things (IoT) society. Unlike conventional sensors installed in objects, add-on type sensors are more convenient and useful for IoT applications. This is because infrastructures and others have been already built and it is hard to exchange completely to just add only sensors. If the sensor can be attached on objects which have been already built, more datasets can be collected easily, resulting in that more convenient informatic life is realized. Other factor in addition to the multimodal sensors is data analyses. Because of tons of sensors installed everywhere for future IoT, quick and real-time data analyses are important to reduce power consumption and datasets in cloud system. To address these challenges, out group have been working on multimodal flexible sensors and their output data analyses using machine learning methods. In this talk, I will introduce a wireless multimodal wearable sensor sheet with real-time data analyses. Furthermore, other types of sensor applications for future IoT will be demonstrated. For these data analyses, machine learning method, especially reservoir computing (RC), is applied for quick and real-time data analyses. For example, body condition monitoring analyzed by mainly RC is explained, and its edge-computing system is introduced. Although a lot of challenges remain for the practical application, these knowledge and technologies may help the future IoT sensor systems.
